The neon glow of Central’s skyscrapers still lit up my office windows at 11:47 p.m. I had just closed another big pitch as the calm creative director everyone relied on. But the second I stepped into my flat in Tseung Kwan O, the mask dropped.

Midnight. The itch arrived like clockwork — raw, relentless, a thousand invisible needles under the skin. I stood in front of the bathroom mirror watching my neck and chest bloom into angry red maps while the city outside kept sparkling.

Forty years of this. This is my eczema healing journey.

How It All Started: Childhood Patches and Hidden Stress

My eczema healing journey began in childhood with small patches on my fingers. Certain foods like mangoes and Kraft cheese were instant triggers. By university, the flare-ups had moved to my forehead, especially during stressful exam periods. It was uncomfortable, but still manageable.

Everything changed when I entered the workforce. I had family debts and student loans to repay, so I pushed myself to the limit — full-time job, freelancing, weekend work. It was 2003, the year SARS hit Hong Kong, and the job market was brutal. I had no choice but to keep going.

The exhaustion took a toll. My skin worsened dramatically — red, flaky patches appeared on my neck, chest, and forehead. I relied on steroid creams from dermatologists, which offered temporary relief. But once the medication ended, the flare-ups returned.

Designer Life, No Balance — The Real Root of My Eczema Healing Journey

Two years later, I landed a new job as a designer. The workload was still intense and I never felt rested. My skin became even more inflamed. I turned to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hoping for a breakthrough. After six months of herbal treatments, I lost some weight, but my eczema persisted.

A colleague then introduced me to a different TCM doctor. After just three days of his medicine, my constant thirst disappeared. Within 1.5 months my symptoms improved dramatically. That experience taught me something powerful: if something is truly working for your eczema healing journey, you feel it quickly.

I also learned that my condition was deeply tied to my emotional state. Relationship pain, breakups, and work pressure always made things worse. Every time I changed jobs or faced heavy deadlines, my skin flared up.

The Wake-Up Call That Changed Everything

Two years ago, I hit a wall. My eczema was out of control — redness, flaking, overwhelming stress. Then I was laid off. Even my feet, which had never been affected before, started showing symptoms. That moment broke me.

I had spent my whole career building elegant design systems for clients — grids, typography, color palettes that sold dreams. Yet I had never once designed one for my own mind on this eczema healing journey.

That was the moment I stopped fighting my eczema and started treating it like a design problem. I created a simple Design System for the Mind — visual, intentional, and kind.

One Simple Affirmation That Stopped the Panic

The first card I made simply read, in electric yellow on deep teal:

I pinned it above the mirror. I read it out loud. I breathed.

For the first time in decades, I didn’t reach straight for the steroid cream. The panic softened. The scratching stopped.

The Slow, Beautiful Healing

Slowly, almost shyly, my skin began to listen back. The flaking on my forehead faded. The redness on my chest quieted. My feet — the last untouched territory that had suddenly rebelled — started to heal.
