IFinding emotional calm during a severe eczema flare-up is something I struggled with for years, and today I want to share my journey.
remember the exact night it burned the most.
Past midnight in my compact Tseung Kwan O flat, the air-con hummed at full blast, yet my skin still felt like it was on fire. Red, weeping patches swallowed my arms, neck, and face. Every shift of fabric sent dry flakes drifting down like sad snow. I stood frozen before the mirror, tears blurring the reflection of the polished graphic designer who had spent the day art-directing campaigns for Hong Kong’s most demanding clients.
In that moment, the glamorous chaos of late-night briefs and neon-lit deadlines felt like another universe. All that existed was the unbearable itch and the shame that followed. I wanted to claw everything away. Instead, I wrapped myself in cold towels and whispered the only thing I could: “This too shall pass…”
That night I reached for the steroids again. They worked like magic—the itch vanished, sleep finally came. For a few blessed hours, I felt almost normal. But I knew the truth: they were a brilliant short-term rescue, never a real homecoming. The flares always returned, often angrier than before.
As a senior designer navigating Hong Kong’s high-pressure creative scene, the combination of overnight revisions, constant stress, and fragmented sleep had quietly dismantled my body from the inside. Western medicine gave me speed when I couldn’t function. I remain grateful for that mercy. Yet I kept returning to the slower, deeper wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Skilled TCM doctors helped me by introducing gentle, cooling herbal blends tailored specifically to my unique body constitution. Exploring these traditional botanical paths, under a professional’s care, became a crucial part of my journey toward rebalancing my system from the inside out.
Diet became a major pillar too. Through careful observation in my tracking logs, I began experimenting with choosing gentler, whole foods and noticing which daily meals supported my skin comfort best. Painful at first to shift habits, but my body eventually thanked me for the mindful transition
In the darkest flares, when I hated my reflection and felt like a burden to my husband, I turned back to what I know best: design.
I began creating what I now call a Design System for the Mind—bold Pop-Art Eczema Affirmation Cards engineered to interrupt the panic-scratch cycle before it spirals. Using vibrant color theory, high-contrast typography, and carefully chosen psychological anchors, each card acts as a visual circuit-breaker for an overstimulated nervous system.
Here are three that carried me through the worst nights:
“I release the need to hide.” Designed in electric Pop-Art pinks and yellows, this one stops the shame spiral. It reminds the brain that vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s the first step toward real healing.
“My skin barrier is healing. I am healing.” Soft yet commanding typography against a calm teal field. It gently reprograms the inner critic that screams “it will never get better.”
“Softness is strength.” A celebration of gentle self-care in bold, unapologetic lettering. This one helped me choose cold compresses and kindness over aggressive scratching.
These aren’t fluffy positivity cards. They are intentional visual tools—mini design interventions that speak directly to the mind-skin connection.
